Pine Cones and Dogs
I have a chihuahua that, when she was very young chewed on a lot of different stuff. I saw her chewing on a pine cone and didn’t think too much about it. It’s from a tree, and trees are the original dog gum. I didn’t worry too much about it.
Later that day, I noticed that she was kind of dry heaving, trying to make herself throw up. She asked to go outside and ate some dog salad — grass — and heaved up some stomach contents. As I went to clean it up, I noticed it had bits of pinecone and grass and yellow stomach bile.
I decided to research pine cones.
I learned that pine cones are not easily digestible and have sharp edges that could perforate the intestines. I also learned that the sap can cause a depressive state for a few days while it works its way back out of their system.
I learned that pine cones are where we manufacture turpentine from. Turpentine isn’t something mammals can digest.
I found that it will make k9s throw up and feel yucky for a day or so.
After she emptied her tummy and we went inside, she slept for the next couple of days.
No more pine cones for any of my dogs.
This is a recent picture of her napping. She turned six a month ago.
If your dog is throwing up, I highly recommend taking your furkid to the doctor for a thorough exam and diagnosis.
