The Vaccines You Need For Your New Family Member
In the USA pets are required to receive vaccines. They are given in a specific series. This is done a few weeks apart to allow the pet to build a resistance to the germs that cause sickness.
Here is a schedule of the vaccines you need for your new family member.
Puppy’s Age | Recommended Vaccinations | Optional Vaccinations |
6 — 8 weeks | Distemper, parainfluenza | Bordetella |
10 — 12 weeks | DHPP (vaccines for distemper, adenovirus [hepatitis], parainfluenza, and parvovirus) | Coronavirus, Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease |
12 — 24 weeks | Rabies | none |
14 — 16 weeks | DHPP | Coronavirus, Lyme disease, Leptospirosis |
12 — 16 months | Rabies, DHPP | Coronavirus, Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease |
Every 1 — 2 years | DHPP | Coronavirus, Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease |
Every 1 — 3 years | Rabies (as required by law) |
Please be a responsible pet parent. Get the vaccines you need for your new family member. The shots will range from 15$ to 100$ depending on the series needed at the time.
If you are giving booster shots to an adult dog your vet can do a test called a titer test. This test is to determine the level of the immunity the dog has in its system. This assures that over-vaccinating does not occur above all, it determines which are boosters are needed.
